Inspiring Quotes "Considered"

Inspirational Thoughts about:

"Anger is the most impotent passion that accompanies the mind of man; it effects nothing it goes about; and hurts the man who is possessed by it more than any other against whom it is directed." - Lord Clarendon

___

Ever notice the thoughts that fuel our anger? Some descriptive words for these types of thoughts might be: Wronged. Helpless. Victimized. Unjust. Not right.

Those thoughts typically lead to a particular set of feelings: Tension. Discomfort. Ungrounded-ness. Unhappiness.

Accompanied by unpleasant physiological reactions: Tightness in the body. Increased blood pressure. Racing heart. Nervousness.

Yes, anger is certainly a misleading proposition. In every instance above, we notice it's the angry person who suffers the most. And after an unpleasant incident, why would we want to inflict any further unpleasantness upon ourselves? With all the baggage that anger carries, it benefits us to come up with a healthier and more empowering way of reacting to life's difficulties.

Next time we might consider an alternative approach. Here's just one way:
  1. Identify the incorrect action of another. (That's easy.)
  2. Get clear on what wasn't appreciated about it and why. (Also straight forward.)
  3. Communicate our truth to the offender - explaining that it wasn't appreciated, and if needed, that it won't be tolerated. (A little more focus is needed here. It doesn’t need to be harsh or filled with emotion. But it should be honest, and direct. Sometimes a more difficult step, but it offers a feeling of relief or satisfaction afterwards.)
  4. For your own well-being, just let it go. (It no longer holds any power over you.) If it's really necessary, take the time to think of a fair and appropriate consequence for the offender to deter it from happening again. The key here is that it be nothing violent or that would propagate unhealthy energy. And then, for your own sake and happiness, let it all go.
Spiritual Growth reflections:
  1. In a few quiet minutes of reflection, can I identify any anger that I've been carrying around with me from the past?
  2. How can I process and release this anger in a healthier, more satisfying manner?
