This section deals with some of the occasional barriers for those considering an Inspiring or Spiritual Book, or other philosophical work.

If you think you might be holding back, see below for various thoughts on the matter...

_____

Overall benefits discussion

The intention of most Inspiring and Spiritual Books is to expand our Self Awareness with insights and simple truths that make a lot of sense. Authors do a great job of bringing fascinating new perspectives to the table and help us reinforce what we already know to be true - in creative and thought-provoking ways. We know we're onto something when we have that "Aha" reading moment. Something inside us stops and says, "Wow, I hadn't thought of it that way. That's pretty good."

A wise person once said that if we were to pull just one or two really meaningful insights, big ideas, or good perspectives from each book we read – and that's usually pretty easy - then they're certainly worth our small investment of time and money.

We benefit by taking these inspirational thoughts and break-throughs away with us. And afterward - through application and repetition – they become a part of who we are. The best news is that when we change the way we think and act, the entire universe responds with new and improved life experiences.

_____

"I really like some of what the author says, but just can't agree with all of it."

In life, we seldom agree with everything a person says...and that's okay. We might reflect on the conversations with our closest friends or family. Or even consider how our own thinking has changed over the years. We can't expect everyone to think exactly the same way. It's no different with authors.

The good news is that we've been truly blessed with the power of discernment, and the ability to choose. We each can take away what works best for us and leave the rest. We have the power to be our own authentic, independent selves. It just doesn't make sense to throw away a diamond (a brilliant idea) because it was once surrounded by coal.

So if we don't agree with a particular point in the book, perhaps we can still acknowledge it as a different point-of-view that was grounded in good intention...and move beyond it.

_____

"A lot of what I'm reading here is common sense. I knew that already."

That statement is 100% correct. We recognize and connect with common sense ideas the best. The authors of successful inspiring and spiritual books know how to present the truths that have been around since the beginning of time, in ways that are thought-provoking and compelling. A great benefit of these books is that they remind and inspire us to reach our highest potential.

_____

"Some of these inspiring / spiritual books share great concepts, but they don't tell me specifically how to turn my life around."

A successful strategy used by some is to scribble down a "big thought" just after reading it. (It only takes about 15 seconds to write a sentence or two.) Then later they take a few minutes to write down one or two ways to apply it in their lives.

Here is an example of applying a "big thought": "This week I will recognize the reasons behind the unpleasant actions of others at the office - and understand that sometimes they're not even aware that a fear or insecurity may be driving them. Knowing this, I won't dwell on it all because that's their experience, and not mine to own. If I feel a behavior towards me is disrespectful, I will stand in my truth and ask them pleasantly, yet directly, to stop.”

_____

"I've seen some mixed reader reviews at online sites like Amazon.com. Now I'm not so sure about the book."

Almost every successful spiritual or alternative thought book on the market receives a significant number of great reviews, and also a few bad ones. People just think differently and therefore have different preferences.

When evaluating an Inspiring or Spiritual Book's comments from readers, focus in on the ones that resonate with you. Also be aware of and disregard comments that may be biased. You can usually tell which ones those are because they're pretty charged up. In the end, it's usually a safe bet to go with the overall rating (average rating) of the book, and your intuition.

_____

"I'm not sure if it's worth spending the money."

For the price of a movie, dinner, or a visit to the local coffee house, an inspiring or spiritual book can provide us with a month's worth of entertainment and value. (Well, perhaps a little less than a month depending on how fast we read.) Besides, we're certainly worth the money. Think of it as an investment in yourself.

_____

"I don't really have a lot of time."

We often find time for the activities we enjoy. Television is a great form of entertainment for many of us because there's a lesser degree of focus required after a long day's work. And reading, while very satisfying, typically asks for a little more mental involvement.

Perhaps small doses are the answer. A wise teacher once pointed out that just 15 minutes of reading a night adds up to almost 2 hours a week. That's a pretty good deal.

If reading is not your thing, you might consider the audio versions of these inspiring and spiritual books. They're quite handy, especially if you want something to help pass the time while commuting or waiting in traffic. You can easily search for them at Amazon.com.

____

"When a book raises your spirit, and inspires you with noble and courageous feelings, seek for no other rule to judge the work by; it is good, and made by a good workman." - Jean de La Bruyere
